You Didn’t Get the Job After the Interview. Now What?

You had a job interview at a company that you really want to work for. It seemed to go reasonably well. But you just found out that you didn’t get the job. What should you do now? Here are some tips on what course of action to take.

1. Evaluate your performance

Go over the interview again in your mind and assess your performance. Did you prepare well enough? Did you do enough research on the company and about the industry? Did you rehearse your answers so that you were able to smoothly and confidently answer the questions with well-thought-out replies? How was your body language? Did you have questions about the position?

There may have been areas where you recognize that your responses were less than adequate. This is an opportunity to address those areas and take care of these issues to improve for future interviews. It’s much easier to perform this audit after your emotions have calmed down from receiving the initial news of not getting a job offer.

2. Don’t take it personally

Yes, this is easier said than done when you have been rejected. But you need to keep in mind there may be many different reasons for the rejection, which may have little to do with your performance. It could be that your skills, though impressive, were just not the right fit for the job. Or the company has decided to go in a different direction.

The important thing is to maintain a positive attitude. Remember that how you deal with failure and rejection is just as important (if not more important) to your career than how you handle success. You have to look on the rejection as an opportunity to work harder, think better and develop resilience, so that you are better prepared for the next opportunity.

3. Ask for feedback

This is something to consider carefully. Companies can be reluctant to get involved with rejected candidates because they don’t know how these people will react, and understandably assume they will be dealing with someone who is angry or distraught.

If the company is a place you genuinely want to work at, you feel you are well suited for the job, and you believe the interview went well, it might be worthwhile to contact the company. But you need to do it in the right way. You need to be calm and polite, telling them that you would appreciate the opportunity to get feedback, and that you hope to work for the company in the future.
