Six Tips for Updating Your LinkedIn Profile

Has it been a while since you edited your LinkedIn profile? If it has, it’s time to get to work and make a few updates to keep your profile interesting and engaging. Keeping the content fresh will help in the future when you’re getting ready to look for jobs. Adding the information when it’s fresh will provide more value than if you update the profile months or years after you accomplished something at work.

1. Update your photo.

If you have an old headshot up there, it’s time to get rid of it and put something a little more professional in its place. Try to select something that isn’t too dull. Maybe you have a photo of yourself delivering a presentation, or conducting a meeting. Make sure the photo is clear and that you look professional. Avoid a group picture. With the quality of cameras on mobile devices, you can produce a quality photograph easily.

2. Update your summary.

How long has it been since you reviewed your summary and added to it? Does it include your most recent accomplishments? If you haven’t written a summary yet, take the time to do one.

3. Clean out the dead wood.

These are words that really add little because they focus on describing you. They are mostly adjectives and adverbs, such as creative, innovative, team player, self-starter. Replace these words with strong action verbs that show your accomplishments. Avoid falling into the trap of using traditional resume words. Think about what makes you unique and stand out.

4. Update your volunteer work.

What kind of volunteering have you been doing lately? Make sure you include this as well in your profile. To find this section, click “edit profile” and then click on “volunteering and causes” in the right-hand toolbar.

5. Update your skills.

Make sure you have an up-to-date list of your skills in the skills section. This is important because it’s a place where recruiters look when they are trying to find people.

You may not be sure how to describe a particular skill, especially since descriptions of skills continually change to fit the changing job environment. If you are not sure, you can use the LinkedIn skill search applications to help you. All you have to do is type the skill into the skills search box and it will compare that skill description to a list of other similar descriptions and show you how popular each one is.

6. Ask and answer questions on LinkedIn

This is a great way to showcase your experience and expertise. It may even catch the eye of a recruiter. Being active in social media helps your online brand.
