Don’t Damage the Relationship with Your Recruiter

If you are using a recruiter, you naturally want to have a working relationship that is as close and amicable as possible. Having a good working relationship could make the difference in getting the job you want and being stuck in a seemingly endless job search.

To maintain a good relationship, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Don’t be a pest.

Refrain from contacting the recruiter each week just to find out if anything is going on, either by phone or email. It’s OK to check in occasionally, but not too often. The recruiter will contact you if they find something for you.

When you do check in, you can develop your relationship by providing the recruiter with something of value to them. For example, maybe you have read an article related to recruiting that you think they would find interesting, or you can recommend someone as a possible job candidate. If the recruiter has a blog, you might volunteer to write a guest blog.

2. Make sure there is good communication.

When the recruiter does have a job possibility, you need to be open and honest with them about your feelings. You need to let them know just how interested you really are in the job, what kind of pay you are looking for, what kind of job environment you like most, and whether you are interviewing for any other jobs. Don’t spring any surprises on them. The more information you provide the recruiter then the more tailored and efficient the job search will be.

Inform the recruiter about any issues with your job history that they should know about. For example, if you have any long employment gaps, you need to let the recruiter know, or if you left any jobs under less than ideal circumstances. These things are going to surface eventually, and the recruiter will not be happy if they don’t know about them beforehand. After all, their reputation is on the line as well when they recommend you for a job.

3. Stay in touch.

Even after you get the job, keep in touch with the recruiter. You can continue to pass along good job candidates or possible business clients. This is a good way to maintain a close relationship because you never know whether you will need the recruiter again down the road. Maintaining the relationship is the basis of networking because it builds trust and shows you just aren’t using people to get things you want.
