Three Tips on Tailoring Your Resume for Specific Job Opportunities

When it comes to resumes, it is definitely not one size fits all. The worst thing you can do is come up with a standard resume format and send it out in batches. You need to tailor your resume to the particular job you are applying for. Remember, the resume is basically an advertisement, a way of selling a product, and that product is you.

You need to get beyond thinking of it as a rundown of everything you have done in your professional career, because many of those things may be unrelated to the particular job you are applying for.

You are using your resume to show the hiring manager that you have the knowledge, skills, and experience to solve his problems and contribute to his bottom line. How do you go about doing that? A few ideas:

Review Your Career

Look back over your past job or jobs and what you did in those jobs. What have your learned from them, what skills and knowledge have your gained, what have your found to be your strengths? How have you demonstrated those skills and strengths?

Make a record of all these things so that you have them ready to hand when you begin to write your resume.

Fit the Resume to the Job Description

If you have a job description, it can give you clues as to what the company is looking for. Use the description to figure out what kinds of skills and knowledge the company wants, and then highlight on your resume past positions or activities where you demonstrated those skills. Also, try to use the same language in your resume as what is used in the job description.

Research the Company

Before you begin to even write your resume, you need to thoroughly research the company you are sending it to. By doing this, you will find out what kinds of skills, knowledge and experience the company values. You will find out what kind of people the company values. You will find out what the company thinks is important. Again, you want to find those things in your past career where you demonstrated those abilities the company values and then highlight them on your resume.
