Interview Tips: What You Should and Should Not Say in an Interview

When you are interviewing for a job, you will naturally have questions about the various aspects and duties of the position, along with questions about the company.

But some questions are better than others, in that they will give more and better vital information that you need to know about the job. These are questions that career experts say you should ask at every interview, regardless of what position you are applying for.

1. What are the most important duties of the job?

In other words, what are the priorities of the job? It is important to ask because a job candidate’s knowledge of the position is limited at best.
The answer to this question will let you know what the company considers important in doing the job well.

2. Is this job one that has been recently created, and if not, why did the person who held the job leave.?

If the job is new, you need to find out why the company created it. What need did they want filled, or what problem did they have that they believe the job will solve?

If the job is not new, knowing why the former occupant of the position left can give you some essential insight into the work and the company. Were there performance issues and what were they? This will give you clues as to what expectations the company has. Did the person leave because of conflicts with his or her supervisor? This might raise a red flag about whom you will be working for.

3. How will my performance be measured?

And, along with the measurement question, find out how you will know if you are doing just average as opposed to doing outstanding work.

This question will also give you some insight about what the goals of the company are and how progress toward those goals will be evaluated. It will also give you some idea of the skills that will be needed in the job.

Moreover, when you know how your performance will be measured, you will be able to highlight examples from previous jobs where you used your skills and experience to deliver the kind of performance the company values.
