How to Write a Memorable Thank You Note After an Interview

If you want to write a thank you note after an interview that truly stands out, one that will be memorable, try one that is handwritten.

These days, most thank you notes are sent via email. They are written in the terse style that is common to email. If you send a handwritten note, yours will truly stand out, because it will probably be the only one of its kind. So, while all of the other thank you notes are sitting in the recipient’s electronic in-box, yours will be the only one sitting on his or her desk, a tangible, as opposed to electronic, reminder of your interview.

The handwritten note has other advantages as well. Because it is on paper, it allows you to create something a little more elegant, more pleasing to the eye, than the standard email. It also shows a thoughtfulness missing from a standard email. It shows the recipient that you took the time and effort to put together something a little different.

A handwritten note also requires you to pay more attention to your writing than an email. Emails are meant to be quick hits, fired off quickly, with content that is brief and to the point. A handwritten letter, on the other hand, forces you to think more about what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. You will have to write it more than once – a rough draft and a final copy – because if you make a mistake, you cannot simply delete it.

And, as with all thank you notes, you want to be sure to express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview with the company. You can also use the opportunity to elaborate on any points that you did not express adequately during the interview, or to add information you forgot during the interview. Finally, the thank you note should push the process forward, telling the recipient that you look forward to hearing from him, or telling himthat you will contact him.
