Choosing the Next Manager on Your Team

You have an important project to do, and your team is assembled. Only one piece is missing – selecting a manager for the team. What qualities should you look for in selecting a manager?

1. Good managers are able to bring everyone together under a common vision.

Everyone, naturally, needs to be on the same page as far as the goals of the project. But a good manager is able to make everyone feel that they are important to achieving those goals, and that they have input into how to achieve the goals.

2. Good managers know how to communicate.

First, they need to communicate with their team – to make clear what the goals are, what is expected, how things will be done. Managers also need to be able to communicate with other people as well – clients and other leaders within the company. A good manager is always available to his team, and able to form a consensus on getting things done.

3, Good project managers have character.

Character is important to leadership. Leaders need to lead by example. Managers need to demonstrate how the overall goal takes precedence over any individual egos or prejudices. He shows how everyone needs to work together, putting self-interest aside in favor of the team.

4. Good managers are knowledgeable.

They know their way around the project, what is needed to do the project well, and how to go about doing the project. They are also good at solving problems when they arise. Good managers know how to tap into the expertise of the team and others inside the company, using their expertise to set up a plan to solve problems.

5. Good project managers know how to delegate.

They know who is best to handle a particular task, and how much work to assign so as not to overwhelm the person. They know how much responsibility to assign to each person and how much oversight each team members needs.

6. Good project managers know how to have “grace under pressure.”

Things never go exactly according to plan. There are always problems and glitches that crop up. But a good project manager knows how maintain his poise and calm in dealing with unforseen events and obstacles. He knows how to maintain the focus of the group on the problem to be solved, and not to let the pressure mess things up.
