How to Hire Potential Leaders

When it comes to hiring individuals for your Ontario, California company, there are people you want to hire because they’re good at getting the job done and there are those you want to hire because you know you always should be on the lookout for leaders.

Some of the get-’er-done folks will turn into leaders. Yet it’s always wise to look for future leaders when you hire.

Read below for tips on how to identify and hire potential leaders for your company.

  • People who turn into leaders tend to be more proactive. They also tend to look at ways of doing processes and procedures differently – they tend to be innovative and always on the lookout for ways to improve things. Leaders tend to look at the big picture and look to the future while developing strategies to meet goals. As you interview, ask questions that will help you ascertain if candidates have these qualities.
  • A potential question to ask, for example, could be “Tell me about a time you saw something at your employer that could be improved. What was it and what did you do to improve it? If you had to convince a supervisor to follow your suggestion, what did you do to convince your boss to make this change?”
  • As you interview, ask candidates about the specific nature of the accomplishments they’ve achieved during their career. Leaders are proactive and know that if they want to advance in a company, they need to be assertive, take risks and make things happen!
  • Ask the candidates which of their achievements were the most satisfying to them and why. This will give you insight as to what motivates the candidates.
  • Remember that perhaps the absolute best way to find new leaders is to develop them from within your current employee roster. Offer opportunity for leadership development and training for everyone in you company and especially to those whom you believe could turn into leaders.
  • Share your company’s business success as well as failures openly with all employees as much as you can because doing so helps create a sense that all workers have an impact on firm. This creates a “we’re all in this together” vibe, which tends to produce a company ethos that encourages and values leadership at all levels, resulting in a great company culture in which to grow leaders.
