Become a Great Manager. Here’s How.

You’ve just been promoted to a management position. Now that the congratulations are over and you’re set to start work in your new role, you may be wondering:

Just what have I gotten myself into?!!!

We understand. It’s not easy being a boss. Not everyone is a natural boss. But everyone can learn management skills that will help him or her become a better boss than nature possibly intended.

Read below for some tips.

First things first. As a manager, you need to take some quiet time to sit and decide what your role and leadership will be. Naturally, this will entail using your natural style, but your natural “way” of interacting with your team members – especially if these team members used to be your worksite peers – may not be the best way as a manager. After all, you are not a true peer. You’re a boss. You have to act like a boss, talk like a boss and you may have to discipline like a boss.

So you need to decide what style of boss-ery you’re going to embrace. Are you a hands-off type of manager? Are you a “my door is always open” type? A “it’s fine to come to me with problems, but you should have a solution in mind when you bring it up” type?

As team members (and they do, no matter how good a boss you are), this is your chance to hire the right kind of person to work for you. Let’s say that you prefer to be the type of manager who wants team members to come up with solutions instead of just letting you know there’s a problem.

As you hire, look for that type of quality: someone who’s a problem solver and not a whiner. Someone who takes responsibility. Someone who looks for jobs that need to be done and does them. Someone who comes up with ideas to improve processes and/or procedures.

Some managers prefer to hire employees based on experience. Others like to hire for potential. Regardless of your preference, when you do hire make sure you offer your staff members the opportunity to learn new skills, get additional certifications, take seminars or attend workshops. Everyone can grow, even you. In fact, you should start (or continue) your own development – after all, you’ll be looking to move up into another management slot someday.
