Job Search Tips for 2012

We’re well into 2012. Have you been following up with that “find a job” New Year’s resolution?

If not – or even if you have been diligent about searching – below are several tips that could help you in your search this year.

  1. If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile yet, create yours. Many companies look to this networking site to find employees. Once you’re created (or updated) your profile, join LinkedIn groups that apply to the industry in which you’re looking for work and your position within it. Participate in group discussions and answer questions (be helpful) when you know the answer.
  2. Speaking of your online profile, Google yourself and see what comes up. You’ll want to see that you come across as professional and business-like as possible.
  3. Sit down with yourself and do a little self-assessment. What skills do you possess that are in demand? What in-demand skills do you need to acquire to make yourself more attractive to a potential employer? If necessary, augment your skills by taking classes online or at a nearby community college.
  4. Search for a job everywhere. What we mean by this is that you shouldn’t rely on one job search tactic or tool to find work. Use Internet job boards, sure, but also use company websites to get names of people who have the potential to hire you and contact them. Join a networking, professional, non-profit or business group and become a member known for “getting things done.” Ask people if they know of anyone who may need someone with your skills and background. Jobs are everywhere, but you need to go find them and not rely on just job boards or the want ads to find them.
  5. Don’t pooh-pooh the temporary or contract position. Many of these types of jobs can tide you over for several weeks or months while you look for a more permanent position. In fact, many temporary positions often turn into direct-hire opportunities!
  6. Speaking of temporary work, if you live in the Inland Empire don’t forget to send your resume to a recruiter at Arrow Staffing.
