After the Interview: Now What?

You’ve just returned home from a job interview. You think you did pretty well. You know you’re a good fit for the job.

Now what?

Now for the follow up.

Yes, it’s time for more work. You didn’t think you could just do a great job at an interview and leave it at that, did you? No, you’ve some important steps to take now.

  1. At the end of the interview, be sure to ask what the hiring manager’s “next steps” will be. Will she be interviewing more people? Will she be calling people back in for second interviews? Will she be making a decision soon?
  2. While at the company, aim to get the business cards of everyone with whom you met. Why? Because once you get home you’re going to be writing a thank you note to each of them. If you couldn’t get the business cards, or if they don’t have any, call the company when you get home and ask for e-mail addresses and titles of each. If they don’t have e-mail, get the company’s mailing address (you’ll be sending a thank you letter through the mail).
  3. Check the business card (or call the company) to get the correct spelling of the names and titles. Don’t assume that John Smith spells his name in the traditional way (he could be Jon Smythe).
  4. Write that thank you note and send it or mail it within 24 hours of the interview.
  5. This really isn’t just a “thank you for meeting with me” missive. Yes, you’ll thank the person for his or her time, but there are two legitimate “real” reasons to write the note: a) to thank the person for meeting with you and b) to reiterate your desire for the job and why you’re a good match for it.
  6. A thank you note is a great way to add something about your background or skills that you felt you didn’t cover enough in the interview.
