Inland Empire 2012 Job Outlook

Finally, some good news!

As you well know, the Inland Empire area of Southern California (Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including the communities of Ontario, San Bernardino, Redlands, Palm Springs, Temecula, Riverside and Moreno Valley) were exceptionally hard hit by the Great Recession, with unemployment remaining in the low double digits for months (and only recently moving in to the 13 percent range).

But that could be behind us in the coming months.

A January 2011 article in the Orange County Register reported on the projections of IHS Global Insight, which stated that job growth for the Ontario-San Bernardino-Riverside area should see a 2.45 percent growth in the job market from 2012 to 2016.

That increase, by the way, would make the Inland Empire the 26th best in the country for job growth, the article continued.

As for job growth this past year – it did remain sluggish throughout 2011.

The Press-Enterprise reported in July that the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp projected that Riverside and San Bernardino counties would lose 3,100 jobs this past year. However, echoing the happier projection for 2012, the article reported that the LAEDC projected a job gain of 5,300 hundred jobs in 2012.

As for when we may see a return to an unemployment rate to the single digits, the article reported that the LAEDC believes that won’t happen until 2014, a full two years away.

Sigh.
